Hi! Ready to learn more about ballet?

Ballet is an amazing sport. The dancers make it look really easy, but if you've ever been in ballet or if you actually know a ballet dancer personally, you realize it take ALOT of practice. Ballet is a graceful kind of dancing, and if you've ever watched a ballet show like 'The Nutcracker' or 'Swan Lake', you know these performances are beautiful.

Alot of work goes into these shows. I know because I was in ballet for 3 years at Ballet Met and I got excellent training, although it was hard. Ballet dancing actually takes alot of muscle, though most people think its only about looking pretty and being graceful. It takes self-discipline, too, so you can hold yourself accountable for working out, staying in shape, building muscles, and being on time for practices.

In ballet, proffessional dancers wear special slippers called 'pointe shoes'. Pointe shoes have a silky-smooth surface with ribbons that tie up your ankles so the shoes stay on--but also, it looks more elegant than normal beginner ballet shoes.  There is a peice of wood [wrapped in cloth so it doesn't hurt the dancer's toes] in the tip of the toe of the slippers that helps ballet dancers stay on their tip-toes, and that is part of the reason why pointe shoes are so pointy. Here is a picture of pointe shoes in use.

There are nine levels in ballet: pre primary,  primary, then grade one, two, three, four, five, and then pre-elementary (for two years), then elementary (for two years).

In the beginner level, grade one, you will learn the basic positions. There are five positions in ballet.

 Praise for the ballet page:

Anya B., age 13--"Thanks so much for making this website! I've been considering ballet lessons for a while now and I've finally signed up! Thanks to your ballet page, I will have a better grip on the positions and the self-discipline it will take to become a ballet dancer, but I think it's worth it!"

Shelby G., age 10--"I just love your website !!!!! It's really fun to learn about all the dancing--especially ballet. I've always wanted to be a ballet dancer. Maybe someday I'll take up lessons!"

Kirsten Y., age 12--"I have been dancing since I was five years old and I just got the part of clara in 'The Nutcracker' performance by Ballet Met. I'm really excited, and now my little sister wants to start dancing, too! She hasn't chosen which kind of dancing to do yet, but I gave her your site as a reference to learn about all the different dances she can choose from. So far, she likes ballet the most. Thanks for encouraging my little sister to dance!"

First position:  Stand with your feet in front of you. Put your heels up against eachother and flex your feet. This is 1st position.

Second position: Go into first position, then spread your legs about one and a half feet away from eachother. Keep your feet flexed and bend your knees slightly. This is second position.

Third position: Start in first position. Then slide your right foot in front of your left foot alittle bit. Your left foot stays but your right foot should have it's heel against your left foot's arch. This is third position.

Fourth position: Start in third position. keep your feet in the positions of third position but slide your right foot in front of your left foot. Your feet should be about one foot apart from eachother. This is fourth position.

Fifth position: Start in third position. slide your right foot all the way across your left foot, so your right foot's heel is touching the left foot's toes. keep your toes pointed out to the sides and your feet flexed. This one may take more practice than the other ballet positions. This is fifth position.

Now that you know alittle more about ballet, let's take a look at some pictures of proffessional ballet dancers.
